RICHMOND, (VA) – In the midst of National Hospital Week, Virginia is again being recognized as one of the top states in the nation for hospital safety scores. Virginia is second overall among states in the Spring 2022 Leapfrog Group Hospital Safety Grade state rankings that are based on the share of hospitals in each state that earn “A” grades. The Commonwealth was first overall in the Fall 2021 Leapfrog Group Hospital Safety Grade state rankings when 56.2 percent of Virginia hospitals graded received top marks. This year, a greater share of Virginia hospitals (59.2 percent) earned “A” grades in the Spring 2022 scores that in the Fall 2021 scores. However, Virginia moved down one spot in the national rankings, from first to second, because North Carolina improved at a slightly higher rate. The Commonwealth has consistently been a high-achieving state in the bi-annual Leapfrog rankings: Virginia ranked fourth in Spring 2021, sixth among states in the Fall 2020 rankings, third overall in the Fall 2019 rankings, second overall in the Spring 2019 rankings, third overall in the Fall 2018 scores, and fifth overall in the Spring 2018 grading period.
“Virginia hospitals are rooted in communities all across the Commonwealth from large cities and counties in our population centers to those that serve our rural and mountainous areas. While each hospital is unique, they all share a commitment to delivering high-quality care and protecting patient safety,” said Peter Mulkey, Clinch Valley Health Chief Executive Officer and the Chair of the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association (VHHA) Board of Directors. “The most recent Leapfrog Group Hospital Safety Grades are further positive affirmation of the work done by Virginia hospitals to promote a culture of safety to serve patients, families, and communities.”
“As we recognize National Hospital Week, Virginia’s continued standing as a top state in the Leapfrog Group Spring 2022 Hospital Safety Grades is something worth celebrating,” added VHHA President and CEO Sean T. Connaughton. “Virginia hospitals have consistently earned top marks in nationwide assessments that benchmark patient safety, clinical excellence, and emergency preparedness levels. By focusing on these core components of public health, Virginia hospitals are helping to lead the way on the work to make this the healthiest state in the nation.”
The Leapfrog Group Hospital Safety Grades assign letter grades to nearly 3,000 general acute care hospitals across the nation. In the latest rankings, 42 of 73 Virginia general acute care hospitals evaluated earned “A” grades, placing the Commonwealth second among states in the nation.
