After starting out the season 0-2, the Alleghany Mountaineers (8-3) varsity baseball team has won eight of their last nine games following their 18-6 victory over the Glenvar Highlanders. The win for the Mounties extends their winning streak to a season-high five games.
Anthony Webb (W, 0-for-4), did just enough on the mound for the Mounties to pick up his fifth win of the season following his performance against the Highlanders. Webb went four and two-thirds (4.2) innings while giving up five runs (all earned) on nine hits. In six starts this season, Webb, is 5-0 with a 2.78 ERA (earned run average) and has struck out 25 batters in 25.2 innings.
There was plenty of offense to go around this one. There was a combined 20 hits and 24 runs between the two teams. Each team had seven players collect at least one hit.
The Mounties offense was led by Conner McPeek (2-for-4). McPeek, collected two hits in the game to go along with a game-high four RBI’s, including a two-run single in the first inning that set the tone of the game. Jackson Ross (2-for-4) and Andrew Middleton (1-for-3) each had two RBI’s.
The Mounties had eight players with at least one RBI.
While the red hot Mounties offense and Webb’s pitching performance was the focal point in the teams victory, the Highlanders struggled defensively with a season-high 12 errors. The Highlanders defensive woes came back to haunt them as the Mounties scored nine times off of errors committed by the Highlanders.
Dawson Anderson (L, 1-for-2), struggled on the mount for the Highlanders lasting in just three innings. Anderson, gave up 10 runs (four earned) on six hits.
The offense grabbed a lift from Jimmy Blount (2-for-4) who had a team-high three RBI’s. The Highlanders had four batters with two hits each. Ashton Meadows (2-for-2), collected two hits in both his at bats while adding two RBI’s.
The Mounties offense collected seven runs in the first two innings to take a 7-0 lead. McPeek, had a two-run single in the first inning, while Ross, Middleton, and Eli Weese (1-for-3) had RBI’s in the second inning.
Already ahead seven runs, the Mounties added three more in the fourth inning on RBI’s from Ross and Hunter DePriest (1-for-3). The Mounties took a 10-0 lead.
The Highlanders got on the scoreboard in the bottom half of the fourth inning to end the shutout. After grabbing two runs to the top of the fifth inning, the Mounties extended their lead to 12-1. The Highlanders bats would then break out in the bottom half of the fifth inning with a four-run inning to cut the lead down to 12-5.
As the Highlanders bats came to life in the previous inning, the Highlanders defense could not keep the momentum going as the team committed three of their 12 errors in the inning which led to six runs scored for the Mounties as the team took a commanding 18-5 lead. The Highlanders would manage one run in the bottom of the inning of their last at bats.
The Mounties look to extend their winning streak tomorrow when the team hosts the visiting Carroll County Cavaliers at 5:00 p.m.
