Wall of Valor pays tribute to World War II veterans. What an honor for the Auxiliary of VFW Post 1033 to be able to revive this board at our local post office. It offers us an opportunity to pay tribute to those men and women who gave so much to allow us the freedoms we enjoy today in this great land called AMERICA.
The following veterans are honored on our current board:
Freddie McCormick turned 100 years young on March 28th. McCormick was recently honored with a pinning ceremony by Mountain Regional Hospice and the Curtis A Smith Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1033 in Covington. He was also inducted to the Post at the young age of 99. McCormick is an Army veteran who served in both WWII and the Korean War. McCormick’s medals are many: Korean Service Medal with 2 campaign stars, WWII Victory Medals, American Service Award, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal and the Good Conduct Medal received during his WWII service.
Jimmie Watters Monteith, Jr was a United States Army officer (First Lieutenant) who received the Medal of Honor posthumously for his historic actions in World War II at the D-Day landings in Normandy, France. Monteith was 26 years old. He is buried in Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial in Collevile-sur-Mer, France.
John Owens, United States Army, is another 100-year-old World War II veteran and is the oldest member of VFW Post 1033 in Covington. After D-Day Owens went from France to Germany.
Arthur (Ott) Lipes was a Navy veteran who served his country 1941-1945 aboard the USS Charles F Hughes. Lipes passed away in 2005.
Alfred William Cooke served in World War II from January 10, 1944, to November 20, 1945. Cooke was honorably discharged as a TEC-5.
Floyd Bruce Cook served in World War II from November 15, 1944, to January 28, 1946. Cook was honorably discharged as a Corporal.
We honor these veterans today and every day for their service. We thank those families who helped make this wall possible. Going forward we will change the wall every two to three months to honor all those veterans from all wars in our area. We reach out to our community to submit any pictures and words about their loved ones for future boards. Information can be sent to Marian Paxton at marianpaxton@gmail.com or, if you have any questions, call 843-496-2664.
The Wall of Valor is located to the left when you enter the post office building on the right wall. We would like to thank Postmaster, Carolyn Moore, and her staff for their support of this project.
We look forward to receiving your photographs of your loved one for future wall.
