Wyatt Griffith (3-for-4), entered the Alleghany Mountaineers (6-3) varsity baseball game on Tuesday evening with just one hit in his last six at bats. He had been 6-for-14 in the prior five games.
Overall, W. Griffith, had a .350 batting average (7-for-20) with seven RBI’s and four doubles.
With just one hit in his last six at bats, W. Griffith, had a huge performance against the Radford Bobcats as he put on a show for the home fans with as he drove in nine RBI’s that included a grand slam and a three-run home run in the Mounties 17-5 win.
As Mounties first baseman, W. Griffith, had quite the performance at the plate, Mounties starter, Anthony Webb (W, 2-for-4), grabbed his fourth win of the season. Webb, allowed five runs (two earned) a five-inning complete game victory.
Despite the 12-run victory, the Mounties trailed early on after the Bobcats scored three runs off of Webb in top of the first inning.
As the Mounties came to bat in the home half of the inning, their first three batters reached base, which set up W. Griffith’s first home run of the day via the grand slam as he belted the ball over the right field wall which put the team up 4-3.
With two outs in the bottom of the first inning, the Mounties grabbed two more runs to take a 6-3, including an RBI single by Chris Harden (3-for-3). Harden, had a perfect day at the plate with three hits in three at bats including the RBI he had from the first inning.
After the two schools traded runs in the second inning and the Bobcats adding another in the third inning to cut the lead down to 7-5, the Mounties put together their second six-run inning in the bottom of the third to take a 13-5 lead. The inning was highlighted with a two-run single by Griffith, which at the time gave him six RBI’s in the game. The Mounties also grabbed RBI’s in the third inning from, Garrett Via (1-for-2), Andrew Middleton (1-for-4), and Jackson Ross (2-for-3).
In the fourth inning, already leading by eight runs, the Mounties added to their run column with a four-run inning. Having already had one run cross in the inning, W. Griffith, came up to the plate with two runners on base and crushed the first pitch of the at bat over the right field fence for a three-run home run. It was W. Griffith’s second home run of the day and the three runs gave him nine RBI’s. The home run put the Mounties ahead for good at 17-5.
In the loss the Bobcats grabbed a solid performance at the plate by Joey Raccuia (3-for-3), who had a three-hit performance, including a three RBI day. Bobcats starter, Taylor Stambursky (L, 1-for-3), lasted just one inning while allowing four runs (all earned) on two hits and walked two batters. Stamburksy, gave up the first inning grand slam to W. Griffith.
The win for the Mounties was the teams third in a row and sixth on the season which improved their record to 6-3 overall.
Next up for the Mounties, the team travels to Floyd County to take on the Buffaloes at 5:00 p.m.
