Ministers To Face German Issues Monday
The Council of Foreign Ministers agreed today to come to grips Monday with the heart of the German problem. They will try to reach a compromise on reparations and economic unity. In a one-hour session, the shortest of this conference thus far, the ministers agreed on a schedule for the Germane discussions and set up a special committee to attempt to draw up a directive on the lesser problems of the report of the Allied Control Council for Germany.
Miners Strike In Protest At Short Rations
Four thousand Ruhr coal miners at Dortmund struck today in the latest German demonstration against short food rations. It was the first such action since unrest over the food situation developed several days ago.

Berlin Wall Is Opened
The Berlin wall opened to tens of thousands of West Berliners today. It was the first time in six years they received communist permission to visit East Berlin and for the first time in 20 they were allowed into the East German countryside. East German borders guards lifted the barriers at nine crossing points one minute before 6 am and Westerners moved rapidly through the fortified strip. At one gate people literally ran past the guards.
The Getaway Car
Sheriff’s deputies drive the getaway car that was to be used in the aborted escape attempt from under the Santa Clara County Jail in San Jose, California. Deputies with shotguns and rifles merged on the area, after one shot was fired by officers, ending the escape attempt. One of the prisoners was killed and the others captured.

Search For Answers, Closure Begins With McVeigh’s Trial
It has been nearly two years since the Oklahoma City bombing and now the task is to find jurors who will decide the innocence or guilt of suspect Timothy McVeigh- and perhaps whether he will die. Lawyers were to begin choosing 12 jurors and six alternates today from the same jury pool the defense team labeled as “poisoned” by media reports of McVeigh’s purported confessions.
A 10-year-old boy was rescued after falling into a 35-foot well and landing partially submerged, King George County officials said. Jason Staples, who lives in Stafford County, was playing with several children in the yard of a relative’s house Saturday when he fell about 6 p.m. into a well whose cover apparently had rotted, a sheriff’s department spokesman said. The plunge left Jason partially submerged in water and trapped in the narrow hole.

Former Covington Mayor Harrison Scott On Ballot
W. Harrison Scott has announced his candidacy for the District 4 seat on Covington City Council in the upcoming May 1 election. Scott, who served on the city council from 2004 to 2008, is married to Rebecca Scott, an English teacher at Covington High School for 30 years. They have two daughters and six grandchildren.
