Packed House Expected For Public Hearing
The largest school budget in the history of Alleghany County will come up for a public hearing before the Board of Supervisors tonight at 7:30 in the courthouse. A call was issued February 15 for a special session of the governing body February 24th “to hear expressions and suggestions” on the proposed $745,186.89 school budget for the 1947-1948 school year. A large delegation of teachers, patrons and friends of the schools are expected to pack the courtroom tonight.

Nixon Visits Wall, Confers
President Nixon visited the Great Wall of China today and called for an end to “walls of any kind between peoples.” Then he met with President Chou En-Lai for three hours. As usual, nothing emerged from the secret talks in the Great Hall of the People. But i 12 hours of talks over four sessions, they obviously have been working on ways to bring their two nations closer. It was not clear whether they had taken up the nettlesome problems of Vietnam.
Bath County Chargers Are Pioneer Districts Champs
The Bath County Chargers varsity basketball team won the Pioneer Districts Saturday after winning the tournament at the DSLCC armory, beating the James River Knights 48-45 in the championship game and earned a berth in the Region C tournament.

Highlands Residents Discuss Property Rights And Fishing Concerns On The Jackson River
At a citizens meeting held at the Falling Springs Firehouse attended Sunday by more than 60 persons, plans were developed to circulate petitions against the state’s new regulations barring bait fishing on part of the Jackson River and to send a bus load of opponents of the newly enacted regulation to the next State Game Commission meeting on March 20 in Richmond. The transportation cost per person for a full bus load of 47 would be $14.60 each, citizens at the meeting learned.

Gas Prices Undercut Obama
Soaring gasoline prices are threatening to undercut President Barack Obama’s re-election prospects and offering Republicans an easy target. With prices pushing $4 a gallon and threatening to go even higher, Obama sought Thursday to confront rising public anxiety and strike back at his GOP critics.
Iron Gate Council OKs Upgrades to recreation Complex
Improvements will be made to the town of Iron Gate’s Cowpasture River Recreation complex. Town Council, meeting Thursday night at Town Hall, voted to approve a contract for improvements to the river property south of the town. An area resident recently complained to town officials that the complex does not provide access for a wheelchair to be placed at the river.
